Overview:The Rhythm of Life Organization (Rolo), co -founded in 1996 by Jazz Legend Herbie Hancock and business executive Joseph Mouzon is headquartered in San Francisco, California’s capital of technology. Rolo’s two core divisions: 1) Consulting and 2)Technology Curriculum Creation, work to actualize it’s two fold charter:
  • To increase the employability of youth using technology and entertainment based software applications
  • To use technology to improve humanity.
Rolo’s Consulting division is actively engaged in a worldwide, 100-city replication effort of the famous Pittsburgh based Manchester Craftsmen Guild — a state of the art, world-class community resource center. Manchester Craftsman Guild’s inaugural replication center, slated for opening 2003 will be in San Francisco; in the Bayview Hunters Point area of the city and aptly named BAYCAT (Bayview-Hunters Point Center for Arts & Technology). The project is being developed with Bill Strickland, founder of the Manchester Craftsmen Guild, Honorable Mayor Willie Brown, Jazz Legend Herbie Hancock, local business executive Joseph Mouzon and others.
Rolo’s Technology Curriculum Creation division - Bringing Cool Applications To The Classroom - created in March 2001 is a solution to the historical and ongoing challenge to teach urban youth technology literacy and proficiency as well as multi-media computer skills. By combining the power of music, film and sports with the practicality of technology, Rolo has transformed the innovative business based application MusicTabs and other Tabs technologies into an interactive curriculum module. This will offer educators and students an opportunity to create projects in a way that is not only interesting and engaging, but also teaches real life marketable skills used in:
  • Web production
  • Audio and video editing
  • Internet "rich media" development
  • Presentations
  • Analog and digital film
  • Image processing
  • Reporting and communications
Rolo’s Technology Curriculum Creations focus:
  1. To engage teenagers and/or students in active, hands-on learning.
  2. To provide students with a flexible skill set, including literacy in both "old" and new media.
  3. To provide positive mentors and role models for disadvantaged youth, introducing them to industry professionals
  4. To enrich the educational experience of students by encouraging meaningful interaction with the community
  5. To showcase youth-authored work illustrating the importance of community-based technology initiatives.
  6. To encourage underrepresented minority youth to pursue careers in technology and new media design.
