Open educational resources (OER) are educational materials available for study at no cost on the
Web. Some are available for anyone to access any time; others, such as Massive Open Online
Courses (MOOCs), require sign-up and are only available during certain windows. Please
note that some MOOC providers offer certificates of completion or other products or services for a fee;
however, the MOOCs themselves are by definition free of charge and include access to the main body of
learning materials.
Being an independent learner preparing for credit by exam, you may not need any of the fee-based
options that are offered. But if you are looking for a coherent course for self-study, lectures on specific
topics, or audio or visual materials that fit your learning style better than print materials alone—a
MOOC may be your answer.
At Excelsior College, supported independent study is not a new concept. We have always stressed to exam
takers that they are acting as their own teacher, and should spend as much time studying for an exam as
they would spend in a classroom and on homework for the corresponding college course.
This guide lists free Web-based learning materials for most of the current exam offerings, reviewed for
appropriateness by Excelsior College staff and faculty. Keep in mind that none of these resources were
designed by Excelsior, nor are they guaranteed to match the exam content outlines completely. They
are another tool available in your study kit. If you discover additional resources, please send the links
to OER@excelsior.edu so we may check them out for possible addition to this document. Direct any
questions you have about these or other Web-based resources to the same e-mail address.
Whenever you’re ready to begin studying for your next exam, check www.excelsior.edu/exam-content-
guides for the official exam content guides and latest version of this document. We plan
to update this guide as new resources and new exams become available.
